Pilates and pregnancy

Pilates is endorsed by the Royal College of Midwives. Due to its gentle, low impact form of exercise, it is considered one of the best exercises for pregnant women and can be adapted at each stage pregnancy. Pilates helps maintain and improve abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, without putting strain on your joints and back and helps to promote mindfulness of one’s own body. This strengthening of the muscles around the pelvic region and increased body awareness can allow for an easier pregnancy, delivery and recovery.

The instructor

Before moving into a career in fitness 16 years ago, I worked as a programmer in IT. I then decided I wanted to share my passion for health and fitness with other people; particularly those who have suffered injury, illness, or who were in need of rehabilitation. So… I decided to become qualified as a Personal Trainer specialising in pre/post-natal exercise and chronic lower back pain. Not long after, I chose to advance my expertise in my chosen profession and went on to gain multiple Pre/Postnatal qualifications, and a  GP referral qualification, which allows me to work collaboratively with the NHS to support and rehabilitate patients through forms of exercise. The roles combined, have allowed me to help aid the recovery of numerous individuals, whether that's in a postnatal setting, or through injury/illness. Still wanting more knowledge and the ability to add safe variations for my client’s needs, I trained in the Pilates method. After years of attending the classes to complement my obsession with rock climbing and cycling, it felt only right that I should spread the word on the benefits that Pilates can bring.

I have personally found huge benefits from continuing with my Pilates practice throughout my pregnancy, helping me stay active and well balanced throughout and beyond.

It really is not an exclusive club but something everyone can do, whatever the background.
